Independence in Our Communities, Regardless
of Age or Ability
Wisconsin can build a future where people with disabilities and older adults have the choice and support to remain in their homes and communities.

People should not have to leave their homes or communities simply because they acquire a disability, grow older or need assistance with everyday activities.

That principle is increasingly important for Wisconsin. The state’s population is aging, with nearly 1.7 million Wisconsinites projected to be age 60 or older by 2030. At the same time, people with disabilities of every generation continue to face barriers to accessible housing, reliable transportation, caregivers and the home and community-based services that make independent living possible.

The Wisconsin Independent Living Network (WILN)—Wisconsin’s eight disability-led Independent Living Centers, the Wisconsin Coalition of Independent Living Centers and the Independent Living Council of Wisconsin—is calling for policies that strengthen choice, independence and community living across the lifespan.

The 2027–2029 legislative session offers an opportunity to prepare Wisconsin’s long-term care and community support systems for the future.
